meerabai ke bhajan

Meera Bai was a devotee of Lord Krishna and Hindu spiritual poet. She was one of the most popular bhakti-saints of the Bhakti movement. Her songs dedicated to Lord Krishna are still very famous and known in North India & are sung with reverence. Meera belongs to a royal family and was born in Rajasthan. There are many mythological stories and legends about Meera Bai’s life. Through all these legends we came to know the stories of love & devotion of Meerabai towards Lord Krishna and her bravery. Through them, it is also learned how Meerabai bravely fought the social and family rituals and became engrossed in her devotion by considering Krishna as her husband. Her in-laws did not consider his Krishna devotion to be a royal family and tortured her from time to time.

In the Indian tradition, thousands of devotional poems written in praise of Lord Krishna are associated with Meera, but scholars believe that some of these poems were composed by Meera and the rest of the poems seem to have been composed in the 18th century. Many such poems, which are believed to have been composed by Meerabai, seem to have been written by their fans. These poems are called ‘Bhajans’ and are very popular in North India.

Meerabai’s life has been the subject of many films, literature and comics in the modern era.

Early Life

There are no reliable historical documents related to Meerabai’s life. Scholars have tried to shed light on Meerabai’s life from literature and other sources. According to these documents, Meera was born in Merta, Rajasthan in 1498 in a royal family.

Her father Ratan Singh Rathod was the ruler of a small Rajput princely state. She was the only child of her parents and her mother died when she was a small child. She was taught subjects like music, religion, politics and administration. Meera was brought up under the care of her grandfather, who was a serious worshiper of Lord Vishnu and was a warrior as well as a devotee-heart and the visit of saints and saints was always present here. In this way, Meera kept coming in contact with the saints and religious people since childhood.

Marriage

Meera was married in 1516 to Rana Sanga’s son Bhoj Raj, the prince of Mewar. Her husband Bhoj Raj was wounded in 1518 in a conflict with the rulers of Delhi Sultanate and due to this he died in 1521. Within a few years of her husband’s death, her father and father-in-law were also killed in a battle with Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire.

It is said that according to the prevalent practice of that time, after the death of the husband, Meera tried to sati with her husband, but she was not prepared for it and gradually she became disenchanted with the world and the saints. She started spending her time in the Kirtan of saadhi santo sangeet.

Krishna Bhakti

After the death of her husband, her devotion increased day by day. Meera often went to temples and danced in front of Krishna’s devotees in front of Krishna’s idol. Meerabai’s Krishnabhakti and thus dancing and singing did not suit her husband’s family, due to which many times they tried to kill her by giving her poison.

It is believed that Meera was called Merta by ‘Rao Biramdev’ around 1533 and the next year after Meera’s Chittor renunciation, Bahadur Shah of Gujarat took over Chittor in 1534. In this war, ruler of Chittor, Vikramaditya was killed and hundreds of women committed jauhar. After this, in 1538, Rao Maldev, the ruler of Jodhpur, captured Merta, after which Biramdev fled and took refuge in Ajmer and Meera Bai went on a pilgrimage to Braj. In 1539, Meera Bai met Roop Goswami in Vrindavan. After residing in Vrindavan for a few years, Mirabai went to Dwarka around 1546.

In the erstwhile society, Meerabai was considered a rebel because her religious practices were not compatible with the traditional rules established for a princess and widow. She spent most of her time visiting Krishna’s temple and visiting saints and pilgrims and creating devotional posts.

The Death

It is believed that after staying in Vrindavan for a long time, Meera went to Dwarka where in 1560 she was ensconced in the idol of Lord Shri Krishna.
