Gorakhnath or Gorakshanathji Maharaj belonged to the Nath Yogi before the first century (evidence is Panchang, created by King Vikramaditya who started the Vikram Samvat from the first century when Guru Goraksh Nathji was in the time of King Bhartrihari and his younger brother King Vikramaditya. Guru Gorakhnath ji traveled all over India and composed many books. Gorakhnath’s temple is located in Gorakhpur city of Uttar Pradesh. This district is named Gorakhpur after Gorakhnath.
The Gurkhas of Nepal got the name only after the name of Guru Gorakhnath. There is a district in Nepal Gorkha, that district also got the name Gorkha. It is believed that Guru Gorakhnath first appeared here. There is a cave in Gorkha district which has the foot sign of Gorakhnath and a statue of him. Every year, Vaishakha Purnima is celebrated every year, which is called ‘Rot Festival’ and a fair is also held here. One place of Guru Goraksha Nath Ji is also situated in the high mound Goga Medi, Rajasthan Hanumangarh district. His marhi is in Veraval near Somnath Jyotirlinga. They have twelve and a half sects.
Guru Gorakhnath was a yogic yogi, he started the Hatha Yoga tradition. He is considered an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Gorakhnath is also called Manas son of Guru Matsyendranath. According to belief, Guru Matsyendranath went to a village to beg. A woman appeared very sad while begging at home, So the Guru asked what is the problem? Woman said – I have no child. Seeing that woman disturbed, Guru Matsyendranath read a mantra and left by blessing her with the son. After nearly twelve years, Guru Matsyendranath resumed in the same village and reached that woman’s house. Calling the woman from outside the door and said, now the son must have been twelve years old. In reality, that woman is unaware of Guru Matsyendranath’s accomplishments. So instead of eating, the Bhubhta given by Guru Matsyendranath she had thrown in cow dung. The accomplishment of Guru Matsyendranath was so strong that the bhubhta was not useless. The woman got nervous and told the whole thing that I threw Bhubhta in cow dung.
Guru Matsyendranath said, Show that place, Going there, a cow is standing on top of a pit filled with cow dung. And pouring our milk into the pit, then the Guru made a sound to the child at that place. A twelve year old pretty charming boy freaked out from that dung place with the voice of Guru Matsyendranath and with folded hands stood before Guru Matsyendranath. Thus Baba Gorakhnath was not born from a woman’s womb, rather it was a defense made by cow dung and go. Hence his name was Goraksha. Guru Matsyendranath took this child with him and later, this child became Guru Gorakhnath. Gorakshanath started the tradition of Nath Yoga and today, as many asanas, pranayam, hetkarma, mudra, nadanasundhan or Kundalini etc. talks about yoga practices, it is all from them.
