Bachchan was born in the northern part of India, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. His father, the great poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan was a Hindu, while his mother Teji Bachchan was a Sikh. A very interesting fact about Bachchan lies in his name. Previously he was named as Inquilaab as he was born during the time of Independence. However, his father was suggested by his poet-friend to name his son ‘Amitabh’ which means ‘the light that will never die’. Although Harivansh bore the title as ‘Srivastava’ yet, he published his works under the pen name ‘Bachchan’.
Bachchan’s education began at the Sherwood College, Nainital. Later he shifted to the Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi.
