Ramdev ji (Baba Ramdev, Ramsa Pir, Ramdev Pir) is a folk deity of Rajasthan who is worshiped in various Indian states including Rajasthan and Gujarat. A grand fair is held in the month of Bhadrapada at Ramdevra (Jaisalmer), the place of their samadhi, where lakhs of devotees reach from all over the country. He was a ruler of the fourteenth century who supposedly possessed miraculous powers. Ramdev devoted his complete life for the dalits & poor upliftment. Many societies in India worship him as their presiding deity. He is known as the avatar of Lord Krishna.
The background:
He is considered to be the Kalki avatar of Lord Vishnu. King Ajmal married Queen Minaldevi. King Ajmal was saddened by being childless. He went to Dwarka and prayed to Shri Krishna that he should have children like him. He had two sons, the elder Biramdev and the younger son Ramdev. Ramdev was born In 1805, Bhadra Shukla Duj was born into a Rajput family in Randeria, Undu-Kashmir in Barmer district.
Baba Ramdev is also adorable to Muslims and they worship him as Ramsa Pir or Ramsha Pir. Ramdevji had miraculous powers and his fame spread far and wide. According to legend, five Peers from Mecca came to test the powers of Ramdev. Ramdevji welcomed them and requested them to have food. The Pirs refuse, saying they only eat in their private utensils, which are currently in Mecca. Ramdev smiled and told them that he saw your dishes are coming and when the pirs saw that their vessels were coming flying from Mecca. Satisfied with the abilities and powers of Ramdevji, he bowed to him and named him Ram Shah Pir. Influenced by Ramdev’s powers, the five Peers decided to stay with him. Their mausoleums are also located near the tomb of Ramdev.
Ramdev believed that all humans are equal. Whether it is poor or rich, low or high, he considered equality for all human beings. He helped the Dalits by giving them the fruits they desired. He is often depicted riding on a horse. His followers are spread across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai, Delhi as well as Sindh in Pakistan. Many fairs are held in Rajasthan. His temples are located in many states of India.
Baba Ramdev In 1882, Bhadrapad Shukla Ekadashi took a living samadhi at Ramdevra (10 km from Pokaran) in Rajasthan.
Ramdev Jayanti, i.e. Baba’s birthday is celebrated annually by his devotees all over India. This date falls on the second half of the month of Bhadrapada of Hindu calendar. This day is declared a public holiday in Rajasthan and an inter-country fair is organized in the temple of Ramdevra called “Fair of Bhadwa”. In this fair, lakhs of Hindu and Muslim pilgrims from every corner of the country visit and pay obeisance at Baba’s samadhi.
