Birth

Tejaji was born in Kharnal on the day of Vikram Samvat 1130 Magh Sudi Chaudas (Thursday 29 January 1074, according to the English calendar). His father was Kunwar Tahd ji, chief of Kharnal of Nagaur district in Rajasthan. His mother’s name was Ram Kanwar., Who was the chief of the Gantantra Tyoda (Kishangarh, Ajmer). Tejaji’s mother and father were worshipers of Lord Shiva. The mother Sugna is believed to have received a son from the blessing of the serpent-god. Tejaji’s aura at birth was so strong that he was named Teja Baba. Udayaraja, the elder of Nagvanshi Tejaji, captured Kharnala and made it his capital. There were 24 villages in Kharnal Pargana.

Marriage

Tejaji was married to Pemal, daughter of Rai Mal Jat of Jhanjhar gotra, who was the head of the village Paner. Pemal was born on Buddha Purnima Vikram S 1131 (1074 AD). Tejaji was married to Pemal in Pushkar in 1074 AD when Teja was 9 months old and Pemal was 6 months old. The wedding took place at Pushkar Ghat on the day of Pushkar Poornima. Pemal’s maternal uncle’s name was Khaju-Kala, who had enmity with the Dhaula family and was not in favor of the relationship. A dispute arose between Khaju Kala and Tahad Dev. Khaja Kala became so cruel that he attacked Tahad Dev to kill him. To protect himself and his family, Tahad Dev had to kill Khaju Kala with a sword. Tejaji’s uncle Asakaran was also present on the occasion. This incident did not go well with Pemal’s mother, who now wanted to take revenge on Tahd Dev and his family.

His father was the village headman. It is a story that Tejaji was married in childhood to Pemal, the daughter of Rayamalji in Paner village, but shortly after the marriage, his father and Pemal’s maternal uncle got upset and the sword went off in which Pemal’s maternal uncle died. Because of this their marriage was not told to them. Once his sister-in-law told Tejaji this as taunts then riding on the horse ‘Leelan’ to take his wife Pemal, after getting upset with Tano, went to his in-laws’ home. Due to some ignorance there he disobeyed the in-laws. Angry Tejaji started returning from there, then his first meeting with Pemal was with his friend Lachha Gujari. The same night Lachha Gujari’s singing stole Meena of Mer. On the way, when Tejaji found a snake burning in the fire, he saved the snake but he became very angry due to the snake being separated and started bashing them, then he promised to bite the snake while returning and proceed towards the in-laws. Committed to Lachha’s prayer, Tejaji struggled with the Meena robbers and got them back. Tejaji was heavily injured in this cow protection war. On coming back, he came on the snake’s bill in the cradle of promise and got a snake cut on the tongue due to wounds all over his body. He died of a snake bite in Sursara near Kishangarh on Bhadrapada Shukla 10 Samvat 1160 (28 August 1103) and Pemal also sati with him.

That snake, pleased with his commitment, gave him a boon. Due to this boon, Tejaji also became revered as the God of snakes. In the village, there is a statue of Nag Devta along with Tejaji’s Deora or his swordsman Ashwarohi idol. In these devars, venom is sucked out by snake bite and Tejaji’s string is tied. Tejaji’s Nirvana Day Bhadrapada Shukla Dashami is celebrated every year as Tejadashmi.
